Well the Cape 'n' Rainy really lived up to it's name this weekend. It was wet, windy and cold it seemed dryer under the water! First dive of the day was with old friend Mark (Markymark)& another newbie Nina.
We all decided on a gentle run round the 6m shelf for Nina to get acustomed to the cooler UK water and then down to the dreamer and around. Unfortunately Nina's ears just weren't going to clear so she had to return to shore. Mark & I went it alone down to the african queen, over to Podsnap, Found a big Spider not sure where it was, then back round the edge to find a very poorly looking gnome collection and then out for a cup of tea. Not bad for a 26min dip.
Second dive and Nina was back in the game, ears all sorted and raring to go. This time, with Mark holding the compass again, we took it nice and slowly down to the African queen, over and through the container and then back to the 6m shelf to ride Shergar and torment the fish a nice little run round to get Nina comfy with the cooler waters after her Majorcan OW training
Day 2 - Dive 3
As Nina had missed out on the first dive yesterday with Mark I thought itonly fair to recap the route we had taken (also made me look like I knew where I was going!!) so we followed a similar route round to look at the african queen and the big spider (Hope spiders didn't spook her to much!) and then back to the edge a steady run round for 35 minutes
Dive 4 - We decided a bit of profeddional navigation was in order, so we headed straight down past Lord Lucan and then onto Dreamer down to Orca, we were impressed followed it through without issue. We thought to head back we would aim for the helicopter, looked simple enough, we followed the map unt wec to a cliff that just disappeared into a VERY murky abyss, all we had to do was swim in a straight line at the same depth for about 25m, we both looked over the edge then at each other and just shook our heads, we may have been daft newbies but we weren't that stupid!! So we back tracked to the quarry edge (we thought) and started heading home. By this time Nina was starting to get cold and following the edge didn't seem to show any familiar sights, you guessed it we were well and truely lost. Only think left to do was follow the quarry edge to the surface, only problem the quarry edge stopped 6m from the surface, we were somewhere in the middle still, we decided the last 6m had to be an SMB-less ascent, we made to the surface to find we had been going round in circles and had a 100m surface swim to the shore. All in all it was a fun dive and very enlightening for us both, but navigation is definately something we have to work on!!
Good luck to both Nina and Mick with the October Dive in Majorca, see you at the dive show.
